Gregor Walker’s Dodgy Spikers won through against Ian McGrath’s Mental Eagles in what was virtually a title decider with Eagles knowing they had to win and hope Spikers would falter in their final game of the season against SoVoBo.
The first set saw nervous play from both sides with the scores progressing to 22 points each before Eagles swooped ahead to win 25-23. This spurred Spikers who finally realised they had to do better and this they did in the early stages taking a 12-5 lead. Back came Eagles and again the second set was poised at 22 points each just like in the first set. This time it was Spikers who stepped up to the mark levelling the game with a 25-22 score. With four minutes remaining the third set decider commenced and it was probably fitting that it was tied at 5 points each at full time, virtually sealing the championship for Spikers.
In their final fixture Spikers made sure of the championsip trophy in their match with Steve Martin’s SoVoBo winning 25-13; 25-20. SoVoBo also lost out to Kinross sides Kintronics and Scotrange, ending their first season of competition. Scotrange dumped Hitting Bricks and Kintronics to finsh their season in a disappointing fourth place. The match between Mental Eagles and Kintronics also turned out to be a bit of a marathon with the young Kinross side surprising the league challengers by taking the first set 28-26. Eagles got back on track to take the second set 25-13 taking the match to a third set decider. The third set was tied at 9 points each with a minute remaining before Eagles won through 11-9 at full time.
And so this season’s competition comes to a conclusion with Spikers crowned champions ahead of nearest challengers Mental Eagles and Team Fife.
